Everybody's an Atheist

Just a quick note for this week.

Everybody is born an atheist. Anybody who isn't probably falls under the category of "clinically insane" and may find that their calling in life is to start a religion. But other than that, we're all born as godless unbelievers.

That is our hope for the downfall of organized religion. Convincing true believers that their "God" is an immaginary friend is time consuming and generally futile. But children are born with the right idea. All we have to do is prevent the god-botherers from getting to them.

Cheers,

Josh

ok now josh. scientists and neurologists and psychologists and psychoanalyzers can all point to facets of the human brain that create faith and belief. saying that children are born without belief is then a mighty large assertion.

might it not be the other way around? what is humans naturally establish a belief system and then some slowly outgrow it? what if the capacity for belief is largest among the young? the more we learn, individually and as a society, the less we believe in a god--so might not children be the most predisposed to believe, knowing nothing of the world?

unless the 'right-idea' that you speak of is the idea that throwing off all belief is the way to go. even you can not abandon belief. you will say that evolution is not a belief, it is a fact. or at least evolution has hard and fast evidence of existence.

religious believers can support their argument just as well. you will point to chimpanzees and say, 'proof.' and they will point to the grand canyon and say the same. just because you do not believe in the same things is no reason to insult religious believers. they are not stupid for believing what they do... surely their are religious believers who think thoughts higher than you can comprehend.

Hmmm...

Patrick, you bring up some interesting points. I think you may be right about a child's innate penchant for belief.

But I do not point to a chimpanzee as proof. Pointing to the end result as proof of the answer to the question is working backwards. I point to a chimpanzee and ask, "How have we arrived here?"

There are several possible answers to that question which are presented to me:
1) Yahweh created chimpanzees, along with everything else.
2) Vishnu created chimpanzees, along with everything else.
3) Allah created chimpanzees, along with everything else.
4) Chimpanzees evolved over an extremely long period of time in a series of small steps from basic elements to basic single-celled organisms all the way to their current state.

There's reasonable evidence for one of these theories. Maintaining anything else is ill-founded folly.
